The Belt Line Bike Shop of Atlanta, Georgia, takes donated bicycles and invites inner city children to earn a bike of their very own by picking up garbage from their trash filled streets. The Earn-A-Bike program is relationship driven and is based upon the value of an exchange between giver and receiver. Children who pick up 5 bags of trash, debris and participate in a community work project can earn a bike of their own.
Many community businesses, including Atlanta hotels , restaurants and local retail shops have all helped the Belt Line Bike Shops program to maintain the relationships through interactions throughout the neighborhood as well as by teaching children how to repair their bikes and to provide opportunities for them to earn tubes, tires and bike parts when needed. More than just an opportunity for a child to receive a bicycle, the Belt Line Bike Shop helps economically and culturally diverse neighborhoods in Atlanta build community with at risk youth.
The bicycles are received from donors. Most bicycles have been donated through word-of-mouth from friends and family. Belt Line Bike also encourages friends to hold bike drives at their churches and schools. They have a small 20×20 space for bike storage and have anywhere from 20 to 30 bikes waiting to distribute to children on regular intervals who have earned a bike.
