No matter where one wonders along the island of Corfu there are always some really great fresh dishes to be found. That is half the fun of being in Greece is the wonderful foods that are served up. Many of the great dishes that have originated in Greece are now found all over the world, but they some how taste better served up in their own environment.

Get out of that fabulous hotel restaurant and see what the town has to offer up for dinner. When you are in Kontokali Greece you may want to check out Bistro Boileau for some amazing food. They have some wonderful wine choices, including their own vintage. They have live music on Friday and Saturday nights were they encourage dancing with your loved one. It is a rather casual friendly atmosphere with wonderful patio dining.

For a sophisticated modern style of dining while in Acharavi you may want to check out Fuego . It has a great modern style decor and wonderful sunset views off the beach side patio along the coast. The menu is casual American style with Hamburgers, Pizza, Pasta and Salads. There are many local Greeks that come to eat here as well as travelers so it has a good reputation around town. It is also a kid friendly place with a menu designed for them as well as a chance for them to run along the sandy beach right along the patio while you sip on your wine and watch them play.

There is always something really quaint about the restaurants in Greece especially one located in very old buildings. While spending some time in the small fishing village of Benitses you may want to check out a really traditional Greek restaurant called Kahmatapia . The dishes are based on the local fresh fish and wonderful traditional spices of the Greek cuisine. Everything is prepared daily with this family owned place filled with high quality pride. And taking a walk around the neighborhood of this old fishing town is a wonderful after dinner activity.

Italian Restaurant in Singapore After Watching Chinese Opera

Mandy was in Singapore with three of her co-workers on what was a cross between a business meeting trip and overall convention. The four of them had finished a major presentation for the day and thought it went extremely well so they decided to celebrate. They had been to Singapore before and the one thing they didn’t get to do, which they all had been interested in was attend a performance of Cantonese Opera. So, on the night of their big success, they decided that they should treat themselves to a production at The Chinese Theatre Circle. Travel was a significant aspect of their job and the four of them made great traveling companions because they were all interested in exploring the local culture, including the food, wherever they went. So the last time they were in Singapore, they enjoyed some great local cuisine.

They all loved the production and were talking about it on their way out of the theatre. Mandy finally had to interrupt a conversation they were having on the detail of the customs and make up to say that she was famished and they needed to decide where they were going to eat before they could continue. Everyone started suggesting traditional Singapore cuisine options and some through in Chinese restaurants they had heard about. Finally Mandy had enough and had to say that she needed Italian food and could not compromise. Everyone was silent for a moment and then burst out laughing. Mandy was known for strong, and often bizarre, food cravings, and this fit her perfectly. Of course there is nothing bizarre about Italian food, or maybe there is who knows, but it was not what anyone else would have thought to have on that particularly evening in Singapore. It was settled though, the group was going to continue their discussion on the beauty of Cantonese Opera while enjoying pasta and or scampi in an Italian restaurant.

Chock Full in New York

So I am decidedly decided against fighting the fact that retro is in fact, in, and furthermore, am starting to recognize its coolness, which means that I’ve finally become as culturally savvy as the characters on sit-coms for children. That’s all right with me. There are some excellent dressers on some of these shows, and I would give a month’s salary for some hints on accessorizing, and maybe a short shopping trip with their wardrobe team. It does bother me, however, when I see that the kids on the shows seem to know more about Manhattan than I do, even though I was born here, and even though I’m not a cartoon character come to life. But we all seem to agree that retro is in.

This suggests to me that we’re coming to see that some of the best things in life have not changed all that much. The idea of visiting New York, and staying in a hotel near Central Park, is still an iconic notion that always turns out to be a great idea when it’s realized. There’s something about it that goes back a few decades, and has the same shine on it now as it did back then. There’s a lot about New York then that’s appealing to us now. It might have something to do with the idea of recycling, where ideas and institutions get thrown into the mix, and it might have something to do with how we’re all starting to save things again, and reuse, and that builds a kind of instant nostalgia for the things that vanished. Chock Full O’Nuts is a great example of this.

Most people know it as a kind of coffee. New Yorkers over 30 recognize it as an important institution, as the homey diners of the same name, that served the coffee, along with a lot of other things. Their sandwiches were supposedly untouched by human hands, prepared with tongs. Their nutted cheese sandwiches made every kid feel the first pangs of pleasure from comfort food. Thankfully, this institution is going the way of all retro things, by coming back from vanishing away. They’re opening Chock Full O’Nuts eateries all over New York, and in New Jersey, to remind the next generation of the things that made their parents happy, so we can pass it on to our kids, who have so much to teach us about retro.
